difference between plugins presets and vsts?

hey guys can someone explain what vsts,plugins and presets are ?
as in im guessing that sylenth falls under vsts and presets are the different soundbanks LOL
an explanation would be great :)
 
A plugin is a generic name for a 3rd party add-on program. They can be different effects, or instruments, or the combination of those.

VST is a plugin format - the most popular plugin format, in fact. So popular that the term has come somewhat synonymous with "plugin"...so no wonder it can be somewhat confusing. There have been numerous plugin formats along the way but the ones you see nowadays are: VST (which stands for Virtual Studio Technology), AU (Audio Unit, Mac specific) & RTAS/AAX (ProTools specific plugins).

And yes, preset simply means pre-made settings, a collection of parameters already adjusted to achieve a certain sound or effect.
