Ok so I read some tuts here and they are good.

BUT many of them venture in the black keys territory which confuses and complicates things for noobs.

I will show you some white keys scales.

Here are scales you MUST know for pop, hip hop & RnB

2 scales! Yes only 2.

Remember only white keys easy to remember.

1st the do re mi scale: Key of C

C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C

2nd. The most important one in ANY black music style( blues, rnb, hip hop, soul)

Minor pentatonic:(it only has 5 notes! penta=5)

Key of A minor(pentatonic). Again all white keys:

A - C - D - E - G - A

Bonus Scales:

Major pentatonic:
Key of C

C - D - E - G - A - C

Natural minor scale:
Key of A

A - B - C - D - E - F - G - A

Why are scales important?

  • They are the alphabet if you will of the music language
  • They will help you create your own melodies

Very important!!!

Always
practice in time. I mean keep the tempo while you practice. I usually have a track playing in the key I want to practice in.

Here is a site for just that. It is geared for guitar, but can be used for any instrument. They have tracks in about all keys.

A little bit about the number system.

A lot of piano and Guitar lesson use a numbers system.

Depending on the scale you are using it is either 7 or 5 numbers.

The do re me sale, aka, ionian scale has 7 numbers. So instead of remembering all the names of the notes you simply remember the position. starting with the 1st note of the scale.

In the scales used above for example, simple count from the 1st to the one before last. This is because the last is the same as the beginning note aka, the root note.

So in the pentatonic scale you only have 5 unique notes, so 5 numbers

In the ionian scale, aka, do re mi scale you have 7 unique notes. so 7 numbers

This is really just a very very basic primer. I just like to keep things as simple as possible.

How deep should you go in your music lessons??

For piano you should at least be very comfortable with the basic scales as I pointed out before and also the basic chords, to the point where you do not have to think about where your fingers got to go.

If you want more scales than the ones I showed you, you can always use the transpose button :)
