what exatcly is a chord

like if i played a abc chord would i just play the keys abc or are there other keys involved beside thoose 3?

if you really want to know the ins and outs of chords, check up on intervals. Some of it starts to be a headache though.

Yes a basic chord is made up of 3 notes(remember a basic chord, there are other chords that are different, such as 7th chords). Instead of looking at it like ABC try to look at it like ACE.

Or if it helps in numbers. There are 7 notes in a scale. In a major key the major chords of that scale are 1,4 and 5. The minor being 2,3,6. Diminished being 7.A basic chord is made up of the root, the 3rd and the 5th.

For example, say we are playing in the Major key of C(no sharps and no flats).
A 1 chord would be made up of the notes CEG. A 2 chord would be made up of DFA. Follow that pattern to make a index of chords for a given key.

If we were playing in the Major key of D a index of chords would look like the following:

1(Major)-D F# A
2(Minor)-E G B
3(Minor)-F# A C#
4(Major)-G B D
5(Major)-A C# E
6(minor)-B D F#
7(Dim.)-C# E G

Hope that helps

Yes, a chord is more than one note played at the same time, at least three. A, B and C chord would sound really bad though.

Er,

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but ABC is a very *nice* sounding chord, IMHO, an A minor ninth.

And technically, an interval of 2 notes is also a chord. Chords can consist of 2 to as many notes as you wish, though too many notes simultaneously begin to lose any harmonic significance, and function more as a cluster.

No, by difinition something that has only two notes/pitches is not a chord. They must have at least three. Don't believe me? check out these sites that got the low down on what a chord is:

Before showing off what you think you know please get your information straight.

Yes, it is a matter of opinion. I do not find A B C to be so nice sounding.

A chord can have two notes. It's just a 3 note chord missing the middle note. It's called an open chord...

yea chords can be just to notes. it doesn't always have to be 3. as long as you have enough harmonic information to define your your modal station than you're cool. just enough to give you the key and chord scale. like a 3rd and a 7th or something. i dont do that alot i tend to stick to 7th chords. but really honestly music theory is just that THEORY. ANY RULE CAN BE BROKEN!! just do what sounds right/harmonicly strong. cus i've been studying theory for about....3yrs now and 2 of its been jazz theory and you learn that alot of **** doesn't mean much, cus them jazz cats break everything you thought was the "right way" of building chords and things. what i really say is just use your ear. if you dont have a ear tho i guess you gotta go the technical way
