blank spaces?

i was interested in finding out ways to add things into the blank spaces off my beat without it sounding too crowded..what are some of things you guys add?

An extra drum hit sometimes, maybe a tom or something other then a kick or snare, maybe a ride cymbal or wood block. Or even a sound efx, a swirrly sound or something. Anything that might fit. Or, i'll just leave it open. Depends on what i'm going for.

Reverb/Delay will make that empty space seem appropiate.

guitar licks, simple 1-3 note basslines, sound fx, open hats if you don't already use them.
