Best chord overview

A very nice overview of chords per scale.

World's ONLY Complete Piano Chord Chart
Kbd_Poster_Lg_Image_1a.gif

Available as poster if you buy the book, or you can order the poster if you live in America (to send that poster overseas is idiotically expensive).
Available as free pdf, with a watermark on the poster.
Available as paid pdf, without the watermark.
The two pdfs come with 2 sizes printable versions of the poster.

There are some more handy posters on that website, but this was exactly the one I was after. A nice full overview of the chords per scale.

I don't know if that's all 300, I think there's even more than 300 right?
Anyway, it's a lot of them, just download the free pdf and take a look.

If we methodically construct chords within a diatonic framework (major/minor tonalities) we get something like
  • 6 types of triad
  • 3 suspended chord types
  • 12 6th chord types: 2 types of 6th built over the 6 triads
  • 18 7th chord types: 3 types of 7th built over the 6 triads
  • 54 9th chord types: 3 types of 9th built over the 18 7ths
  • 162 11th chord types: 3 types of 11th built over the 54 9ths
  • 324 13th chord types: 2 types of 13th built over the 162 11ths
for a total of 569 chord types for a single starting note.

Leaving aside any considerations for equivalent chords, that leads us to a total of 6828 chords

Knowing the chords is the easy part.....now you gotta figure out how to use those chords.

Indeed, the chord progression chart they include is a joke, as it is merely the cycle of 5ths, with no indication of how to utilise it to create interesting or even standard chord progressions.

Whenever I see these chord charts that's the first thing that crosses my mind. Random chord voicings do no good without understanding progressions
