is it common to play the minor 7th below the root, since this seems to be a much easier fingering? I'm totally new to fingering...any other fingering pointers? let's keep this as innuendo-free as possible.

I think it just depends on how u want it to sound. You really can play the notes where ever u want. You dont even have to play the fifth at all.
