So I've been taking some classes at a local community college, Theory and Piano classes, among others. Im currently learning "The Ballet Dancer" as one of the pieces in the Piano course. The issue I'm having, is that the piece says that its in F Major, which makes complete sense up until the 9th measure. Here we come across Eb, which doesn't fit in the F Major scale - Right? Or am I mis-reading this? Thanks in advance for any help.

my quick reading of this is that it is in D minor not F major (same key signature different home note)

the Eb can one of several intentions

- shifting us to the sub-dominant of G minor/Bb major (key sig is Bb and Eb) before returning the relative major of F
- pure colour tone

the important thing for you to take from this is that unlike most pop music other forms of music tend not to be static in terms of their tonality
- what works for pop does not necessarily work for art music, whilst what works for art music almost always works for pop as well
