Avoiding Phase Cancellation & Comb Filtering....???

How do you 'avoid' phase cancellation and comb filtering when doing sound design...Say for layering kick drum samples to make a 'phatter' kick drum...???

Or just any layering techniques in general where you have to be cautious of how your 'aligning' your samples...as you can inadvertently cause some phase cancellation or a comb filtering effect if not careful...correct....???

Simplest way is to listen to it in mono....if it's quieter, you have phase cancellation going on.
