Automation every note standard?

Hey,

I'm trying to get started in House production, and I have a small question for ya

Is it very standard to automate (pitch, OSC levels etc) every not to get a synth/lead/bass to sound the way you want it to?
or is it more standard to simply make a synth that sounds the way you want it to begin with?

make the synth as close as you can get to the sound you want then try doing other things to get that sound your after. (e.g. automation)

FX and stuff. Like phasers/chorus/flangers/delays etc.
