I hear great things about the focusrite Scarlett but I have not used it. I want to say it is right around $200. I used to have the Lexicon Omega and I liked it a lot and it has on broad pres too. If you do not need the onboard preamps the Lexicon Alpha works well too. I actually downgraded from the Omega to the Alpha and was very happy because the Alpha is bus powered and the Omega is not. Keep in mind they are low priced (the omega is like $200 the Alpha is $75) but they are usb 1.1 which may or may not be a problem for some people. It was never a problem for me.

yeah your going to need an interface and DAW to record in. The interface is where you plug your mic and headphones into. I've got a Focusrite Saffire and love it.

i have also heard great things about the focusrite saffire LE, but it is probably a bit out of your price-range. although it is likely an investment that you will not regret. I would say if you can manage to pay a bit more, go for it!
