so my question is is it possibly with good tuning heads ect. to get a good drum recording in a 15' by 17' room with 8' ceiling and no soundproofing. Any techniques to this?

Anything is possible, probable is a different story.

Start by placing the kit so that it is facing one of the corners about 12 directly out - it is easier to get into and out of and to place mics around it

You might want to make some portable baffles, that you can place around the kit to break up the standing waves in the room.

You have two problems to deal with, flutter (high frequency reflections going back and forth) and room modes (low frequency reflections going back and forth and piling on top of each other). Putting soft stuff (absorption) on some of the walls will help fix flutter. You have to use bass trapping or baffles to fix the room modes. This is trickier and takes more supplies and more space and more money. I would start by through couches and matresses against the wall. That is not the best solution, but it will do something in the right direction for making the drums sound better. Good Luck.
