I am tring to set up a self contined cabaret act to sing in clubs and private functions. I have been looking at what equipment I need and do not understand what midi files can do for me for backing tracks. they do seem cheeper to buy for backing tracks. How do i play them back at a venue and are they better than purchaseing songs on CD and recording them onto midi disc. Can anyone help????

    midi files

midi files are not raw music, just information.. like sheet music is just information not the raw music.
You can play midi files from a general midi module, a synth, a computer with GM sound set, and even some samplers. The quality of the midi playback will vary from gear to gear. It depends on the quality of the hardware you're using to play back the files. Like the playback of sheet music depends on the quality of instruments used to play it , and the skill of the musicians. But with midi you shouldn't have to worry about the 'skill' of the musician. You'll have to find a nice sounding synth or module that has floppy so you can load the midi files. Do reasearch each piece of kit you are interested in before you buy, and buy what your budget allows.
