    Do you recommend portable studios?

There are portable studios that i see in people's studios lately. All they are is a mic stand with a grate-type thing around the microphone. Do these really help the vocal sound in a room with bad acoustics?

Well technology is getting better and you can make a bedroom studio and still produce a pretty decent track. The quality won't be perfect but a good engineer could make it near perfect. I say go for it plus it's always good to practice without leaving your house.

If you can't treat the room properly I say it's better than nothing

Those units are marketed as Portable Vocal Booth (PVB) or Reflection Filters (RF), and they do make a big difference in *reducing* the effects of an untreated room. But there is really no replacement for a nice room.

I have one myself, but I still have my room somewhat treated - some foam in key places to minimize reflections, bass traps in the corners to absorb some low end. I use a PVB/RF as well because, like most of us I'm sure, I record in the same room as my computer...and it makes some noise. I'd rather not have that spilling over in to my mic...

If it sounds good, it *is* good.

Short answer: Yes they help, but only so much. I have my studio in my living room, which means that I have big carpets, a sofa...but even so I have added extra curtains on the wall. It makes a bigger difference than the reflection filter alone.

not really... I don't care how good an engineer is... if you give him crap to work with, it cannot be turned into gold. While a good engineer can may your crap sound as good as it could possibly sound, they are still working with whatever you supplied to them.
    I am expressing my opinion.
Please feel free to express yours, too.
This is a discussion forum, after all.
    Have fun.
