Basic acoustic questions

I recently moved my studio equipment into a closet (5' x 8.5').
I am going to invest into some acoustic foam and bass traps; however, I know nothing about the placement.
How many would you recommend for a room this size, and where do you suggest placing them?

I have seen studios with 3 inch foam covering every square inch of the walls, but that seems like overkill to be honest. Would that be the most effective way to do it?
