Lyrical techniques for rhyming. AUS down under

Well i dont know about everywhere else but here in australia the basis of hip hop music is about lyrical technique and skill, we dont tend to go around talking about our gangs, drive by's, money, killing people, slappin *******, because our part of the world is very different for example if you claim to be in a gang your letting everyone know your ****house at a good old fashion game of 1 on 1 "knuckles up" if you do a drive by you prove that your a dog who runs off after attacking someone, if you rap about money (some prick will try robbing you haha) and you will sound like a homo, if you rap about killing you will either sound like a liar or an idiot who has confessed to a crime (u jst gave the cops something to hold against you in court) we dont "slap *******" if you physically disrespect a woman you would want to hope noone has seen it and she doesnt go telling anyone or else you will have first hand experience on what its like to be inside an ambulance. im not dissing american music im just saying where i live is extremely different so our hip hop is different you could say "the same but different" same style of beats we use MPC's we like to bust freestyles and do graffiti and breakdance and dj but its in our own way. since we dont rap about things we havent done or dont beleive in we speak the truth and base our styles around technique, to all begginer MC's why dont you give some poetic techniques a try, i will use some of my lyrics as examples for poetic techniques.

example 1. Metaphor: saying something is something it isnt - in a song i wrote about graffiti art i talked about a train coming along the tracks going around the bends and curves and our trains are silver so in the song i refered to the train as "the silver serpant" (its a metaphor its not really a silver serpant but its silver and the winding around the hills and valleys makes it almost like a silver snake slithering along) not only is it a poetic technique it has proven you actualy think about the stuff your rhyming about.

example 2. Similie: saying something is the same as something else using the word LIKE or AS - in one of my songs i used the term "like a whacked out junkie your "missing the point"" its using a similie to tell someone they are missing the point of what im saying but im putting it into a funny little comparison with a junkie who is missing the point of a needle in his or her vein (missing the needle - missing the point)

example 3. Onomatopoea: using words like "pop" or "click" what can i say these words can add an obvious effect to your lyrics (this isnt something you would tend to use so much in a rhyme but you might find yourself once or twice using this)

example 4. punn: a pun is a play on words, i dont know about the rest of the world but over here a little plastic bag that you keep marijuana in is called a "sappy bag" so in one of my rhymes i used it as a pun and my lyrics went "im no sappy bag, but you could call me a dope wrapper" (dope wrapper - dope rapper - the sappy bag is like the packet weed comes in so its almost as if its the wrapper. ive made it sound as if i have said im a "dope rapper")

another example of a pun is this quote from the same rhyme "you couldent ROCK A MIC if you smashed one with a boulder" ... i duno i suppose if you threw a boulder really hard at a mic on the ground it would be classed as "rocking the mic" ? haha

im just sayin to some up and coming MC's give this stuff a try, not alot of international hip hop uses poetic techniques and if you wana defend the music you love how can you if your writing poetry without any poetic techniques, hence the reason people think hip hop is crap. well over here people actually love the hip hop because theres truth in it and lyrical skills.

but everyone has their own opinion, some people would just to prefer to hear gangster ****. so this is my attempt at writing something gangster for all those who dont use poetic techniques. here is some australian gangster rap....

"Im gunna snap ya, right hooks will fukn crack ya, fracture ya back betta ring your chairophractor, hip hop has elements well im the soul factor, making earth move like a farmer with a tractor, slicin necks like claws from a velocer raptor, your life story only consists of one chapter, my eye from the sky like sauron i will track ya, attack ya, on ya bloody PC or Mac brahh!"

im so confused about the point of this thread....i mean unless you type 1000 words a min i know that it took you a long time to write this i just wish i knew how to take it.....

cause you could be trying to say that aussie rap is more politically correct..its flat out better all we do is bullshyt...we dont know what real hip hop is...or you could be insulting my intelligence like i dont know what a metaphor or pun is.

another example of a pun is this quote from the same rhyme "you couldent ROCK A MIC if you smashed one with a boulder" ... i duno i suppose if you threw a boulder really hard at a mic on the ground it would be classed as "rocking the mic" ?
thats not a pun A pun (or paronomasia) is a phrase that deliberately exploits confusion between similar-sounding words for humorous or rhetorical effect.

like i wish you would have just wrote a verse and been like im reppin aussie aussie idda said oy oy good job cause you have some really good lines but to come on a website talkin about how you do things in your country as if hip hop isnt a world wide thing would be like me going to france and expecting them to speak english. its just ignorant and it ignorant because i know they speak french but i choose to ignore it

just so you know i dont know about australia but to me violence is violence weather you are talking about shooting drivebys punchin someone ar breakin somebodies back...but i would enjoy reading ur rap if you post some
want people to see you fly in the radar

If you really wanna know, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. And by definition, I mean blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

And don't let me forget to mention blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

But if you REALLY wanna break it down, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

that "phaseless" guy who is so original by replacing the letter F with a PH has this under his comment "10% of the worlds population cause all the bad news in the world...y do we see so many problems?" its people like you that magnify the bullsht in the world. noone said any of you have to read this thread and i never said you would all have to agree with it. typical american egos. to the guy that went blah blah blah either ur stupid or cant read large paragraphs of text without ur short attention span ruining it. why would i put up audio examples when i just wrote it there in text? itd actually be alot easyer in text then in audio cos some americans have trouble understanding words due to the aussie accent being different. you all need to understand that the point of this thread wasnt to say that my music is better it was just me trying to help up and coming MC's out there by teachn them to step the skill level up a bit and dont just rap about silly crap with single-syllable rhyme words. the point of this blog is talking about AUSTRALIAN hip hop so people from america dont comment on this if you dont know where im coming from. if you witnessed the quality of aus hip hop thats over here you would all go home knowing you can make a DOPE hip hop track without talking about money or guns or violence

Okay, in all honesty, I see what you're trying to do.

Trying to drop some knowledge, yes? All the while being quite (maybe inadvertently) condescending to anyone who isn't a part of the Aus hip hop scene. Yes, I know you're not in to the "gangster sh*t", neither am I. I am in the USA, too. Surprise.

A bit of advice. Next time you want to write an educational essay, try to use proper grammar and go easy on the shorthand. It's hard to read, as you say, large paragraphs of text without my attention span ruining it, when it's littered with "urs" and has very little punctuation or capitalization.

If you're so knowledgeable on poetic mechanisms, your posts should really represent a lot more knowledge of grammar than they do at present.

But, again, I see where you're coming from. Just work a bit on not being so condescending and please, please capitalize so it's easier for those of us with "typical American egos" to read.

    Good luck.

    -E.

Its not condesending, people just dont wana touch apon the reality things. its not saying anything is bad its just different and its not directed at people who can already rhyme. its for BEGGINNERS. if YOUR so knowledgeable why havent you got posts on poetic techniques? i think you need to stop and have a think about your attitude if you are going to argue with someone who was just trying to help out newbies. its not saying that aus hip hop is better at all, think of how much $$ US rappers have compared to the ones here, obviously the hip hop there has to be better if rappers own private jets ect. im just saying this is how we do it over here, so to any newbies out there why dont you try giving it a go the way i described using poetic technique and then try giving it a go talking crap about being a gangster and see which rhyme your friends and fans like better. im not 2 worried about all you haters cos over there you might be dope rappers but over here you will be humiliated on stage if you tried to lie through your rhymes n talk about bling bling. THIS IS FOR NEWBIES SO ALL YOU DOOSHBAG MCS WHO'S EGO HAS BEEN BRUISED HARDEN THE **** UP! if ur so good at rapping how come your sitting on the internet not in the booth recording? peace.

This is going to be fun.

    Its not condesending...
    Oh, it isn't? My bad.

if YOUR so knowledgeable why havent you got posts on poetic techniques?
obviously the hip hop there has to be better if rappers own private jets
    - Careful, your sarcasm is dripping.

try giving it a go the way i described using poetic technique and then try giving it a go talking crap about being a gangster and see which rhyme your friends and fans like better

Oh, no, none of that was condescending at all.

Here's where you went wrong. You assume that the fact that you consciously use poetic techniques in writing hip hop lyrics is somehow revolutionary. There have been many, many posts here describing poetic techniques and their uses in hip hop.

Now, I'm not trying to argue with you. You need to rewrite this post as an unbiased, edited, properly formatted essay and THEN the knowledge will be passed on like you apparently wished it to be. At present, it just appears to be an Australian hip hop head putting down USA hip hop and telling the rest of the world that, *gasp* poetic techniques can be used in POETRY (rap)

So, no hard feelings here. I just advise you to approach this from a different angle, so you'll take less heat.

And again, man. When you start a new idea, start a new paragraph.

    -E.
