    Sampling New Music, Your Opinion...

    What's Good Everybody?

I remember the first time I heard Lupe Fiascos "The Show Goes On". I was pissed. Modest mouse was a group I had a lot of respect for and I felt like Kane Beatz had no real talent and was just "cheating" to make music. For a long time I couldn't even listen to that song when it came on the radio. I thought "WTF!!!!" this song isn't that old, he's stealing their music. It wasn't until I stepped back and realized that what I was doing wasn't any better. Yeah my samples weren't from 2004 but they WERE from the 1970's. Im pretty sure the OGs were pissed when hip hop started sampling The Ojays and Temptations. My point is that I no longer feel that its wrong to sample newer music; In fact, my next mixtape will have a lot music that is sampled from newer songs. Sampling is sampling and good music is good music. Selling that music is a different story tho.

What are your thoughts on sampling newer music? Is it wrong or is it Ok?

I think it comes down to why are you sampling? Everyone has their own aspirations and reasoning for what they do. When I started thinking about what I wanted from sampling I stopped sampling and started looking at how to create the sounds I was looking for. Its working really well for me.

I don't like much modern music in general these days, so I'll avoid sampling it. But there's so much out there to sample, anyone can sample what music they enjoy

That song Wale sampled for Sabotage is crazy! I was kinda disappointed when I realized it was really just a jack with new verses and drums than a sample. They just looped the intro had Wale rap on it and Lloyd sing the hook over and didn't change a word or anything. The song came out in 2010. I like the song though.

I like sampling any and everything I possibly can. The genre usually determines how I use the sample. For example: if I was to use some new music, I would use a part of the lyrics as a hook. I would do that because todays pop and hip hop producers sounds are too full to sample in my opinion. Meaning the drums are either hitting too hard or there are no sections without lyrics in them. It's usually easier to sample old school tracks because you can bass cut them more easily.

Something important to note about "The Show Goes On" is that it's an interpolation. The guitar sample was actually replayed by the guitarist Kane signed to his label. Goes a bit further than sampling in my opinion. The Roots do stuff like this all the time.

I used to feel like you did, but as I grew I began to open my mind up a bit. Still not really a fan of people sampling songs that JUST dropped though. Nothing technically wrong with it, but as respect for the original artist, I'd like to let their song breathe a bit before I use it for my own benefit.
