Putting the samples into the computer MAC OSX

I Have recycle and reason . Using mac osx

what software do you use to record your samples into your computer.
Tried using garageband but its a hassle as it add silence onto the end of your track and you have to export to itunes ...

if you could advise it'd be great. preferably something free.
