most my beats I try and lay a bassline over 4 bars but im wondering to make it more interesting to lay it over 8 bars to add a bit more variation but theres only so much you can do when laying a bassline over samples to keep it in key so I was wondering how many of you lot try 4 or 8 bars heres an example of a bassline over 4 bars

What he said^ listen to alot of old school hip-hop and keep that shit funky, the interplay between the kick and subbass is important here (get a subwoofer)

I agree with the comments above. Something else that really helps to is sidechaining the kick and bassline so that when the Kick 'kicks' the bass ducks under it.

I'll often play bass lines that are longer than the loop. It makes the structure of the song more interesting. A thorough working knowledge of music theory is essential in forming interesting and relevant bass lines. If you check out the classic recordings that keep getting sampled over and over, you'll see what kind of skill is involved in making timeless music that moves people. It's far deeper than side-chaining ;-)

get those subs knocking. make sure you listen to the track on as many different stereos as possible after to make sure you got the sub bass right and it's not distorted, i listen on a ton of systems right now right now. monitors, 2 different cars, 2 stereos at my parents house, stereo at my apartment, stereos at 3 different friends houses, 3 pairs of headphones. there's probably more but i get a good idea how it's gonna sound on average this way.

Lots of wisdom in this thread, but yeah, Wilby, nice groove! Is that sampled bass? It sounds like you played an actual bass guitar part.

It seems like your phrase is really only two bars, other than the little pick-up part at the turnaround. But sometimes the simplest stuff grooves the most.

the beat is extra funky. i would recommend just hum and hum and hum into you get something that feels and sounds right. don't force something. also there is nothing wrong, if its the right groove and melody to have a second bass line. EQing makes a world of difference as well........ most the difference.

Just a trick that works for me.....

Use an electric bass patch with a decent ammount of LP filtering to make it blend well with the sample. Set it to monopoly so notes don't clash and leave a good ammount of release on your notes for a good fade out like a real bass does when strummed and notes are held.

How I made the bassline on both of these.

Two things that annoy me are people who are positive out of ignorance, and people who are negative out of bitterness. People who are neither usually get along with me and agree with most of what I say. People who are one of the 2 think I'm the other.
