Vinyl Sampling Help

Whats up guys I just bought this Turntable Audio Techinca AT-PL50 I got it really cheap on Ebay but anyway the reason I bought it said it has a build in preamp to record directly into computer well I tried that and it sounded like crap I plugged it into the direct input.... Do I need a soundcard with audio jacks to get better audio quality or a better preamp?

Powermac G4 1ghz
Audio High Jack Pro for recording
