Travis Scott - Antidote. How'd they achieve this sound?

I was surprised to find out this beat used a sample. My question is; how was the sample manipulated to sound so different and dark? Or did they just create an interpolation? What do you guys think?

Probably just re-pitched it or used some sample and processed it. They use a synth later on for the same melody so i just think they made one themselves.
