Skipping effect

How do you make this sound heard in the first 10 seconds? It sounds like an old warped tape skipping. I was told that you can achieve it by gating or using auto pan (which I tried), but I still can't seem to get it right. Any ideas would help!

Nope, within the first 10 seconds.

If you listen closely you can hear that it sounds very choppy on the sample.

put an lfo on the volume, use a square wave to modulate it and set the rate unsynced to tempo to give a more random skipping effect. a trancegate plugin like DVS Neon Gate with random steps removed would work too.
