sampling out in the world

what do you use to sample sounds just out an about?...
i've got a voice recorder with a mic input an line out that works aight, been wanting to get a minidisk with the external mic but there like 160....

talking about for sampling just stuff around the way ....
also what do you use to sample things like at band halls an stuff?... do you bring out your big stuff or have somethen else?
