Manipulating the stereo image of a sample...

So this week im studying dj premier's beats and how he mixes his samples from eq and so so. One thing i've noticed is that he likes to keep his samples at a certain width. So i was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to effectivily spread the width of a sample & even narrow it like dj premier does

Use some kinda stereo/chorus effect or just fuk w/ panning & doublin em up.

Stereo Imager is the effect that can width your sounds. At least that how it works in Reason.
