Importing a live break?

I was reading a tutorial on making chillout drums, and the guy recommended importing a live break from a drummer overtop of the programmed beat (at the point I was at in the tutorial it consisted of kicks on 1 and 3 and snares on 2 and 4). I don't really understand what he means? Wouldn't bringing in a loop over top sound dumb? Or would you cut out the parts you don't want? Here's the article Programming chillout beats « Music Production Tips | Mixing Walkthrough Tricks | How To Videos | Free Samples

This is a really common production technique. It is all over hip hop from the last 15+ years. What I usually do it lay down the live drumming loop and then add the electronic kicks and snares by ear, but you can follow the tutorial if you want more of a ghost note, syncopated feel.
