Let me state first that any editing should be completed before mixing.
You'll want your filters and EQs before your inserts(compressors, etc)
Presets can be a good place to start. But I would usually never just set it and forget it. Use your ears.
Give me a few more posts and I'll be able to see your sig.
It's all about practice, my friend. There really is no "end all" way to mix. You find what works best for you and stick with it. Maybe modify it slightly throughout your journey through mixing. But your style is your SOUND. And a lot of times that's what people end up wanting and paying for. A specific person's SOUND of mixing, not how they do it. All about the result.
threads like this... yeah, i admit i have a unique way of mixing myself. first, the beats i make and tracks i lay down have to be unique because i always feel limited in equipment. secondly, i never learned a certain way to mix, i've been teaching myself, so there is no certain path at least by my perception.
guess it's meant to say you're better off experimenting until it sounds... finished... to you... like USING YOUR EARS totally... caps lock only to stress the importance of using your own judgement mix-wise...

turn all the faders down, then start with the levels, first drums: kick snare, hihat, cymbals, toms, overheads; in that order. Then the bass, guitars, synths, pianos, strings, and any other kind of arrangement, and end with main vocals then background vocals.
after that you want to eq and compress where needed
then you can add delays and reverbs
compare your current mix with commercial mixes that you like, and take breaks to let your ears rest so you can start again with a fresh perspective
once you are fairly happy with the mix, start with automation and add fx that makes the song have dynamic and variation, it can be just eq that adds a different texture to certain track, distortion effects or creative delays, etc
once it is finished, if possible forget about the song for a week and then do a second pass, changes should be mostly creative than technical
This is the procedure recommended for beginners, and your workflow will change as you get better
I always start with presets and move from there. It saves so much time. I use Cubase 5 and it allows you to use your own presets as well. The ones that come with are really good though, sometimes I don't need to change it at all. Also good for stuff that you have never worked with before, for example if there is an instrument that I don't know much about I'd start with the preset.
