Split a sound into mono and stereo by frequency range?

Wondering how this could be done? Let’s say I have a bass instrument which also has a nice high end, which I would like to keep in my production as a part of my track. I’d like to have the lower frequencies in mono, but the high end should be stereo. I was thinking of this: Duplicate track, split my frequencies on each track (basically rolling lows on one of them and highs on the other one), set one to mono and one to stereo. But that’s kind of complicated and annoying, I’m thinking of something much simpler.

They should do like a gain plugin in Logic, but which comes with an EQ — so you can choose from with point you want to make it mono (or stereo).

You've pretty much answered your own question. Duplicating the track would give you more control.

Yes but it would be more complicated. Imagine I want to change some notes, and some effect settings and maybe move the region somewhere else. I would have to do all of this twice! So annoying, man

You can do this with free software. First thing you need is some kind of "stereo-izer" plugin, like a doubler (such as ADT by vacuumsound, which is free) and also a stereo enhancer. Stereo enhancers usually have 2 frequency bands with selectable stereo width for each band. So first put the stereo-izer, then the stereo enhancer. On the enhancer set the higher band to >100% width, and the lower band to 0% width. I do this all the time on dubstep basses.

To be honest I already thought of a tool like that — I have some sort of stereo-izer (although I’m not really a fan of the sound it gives, sounds kind of cheap), however mine does not have any feature for frequency bands.
I’ll make sure to try your technique, although I’m a bit confused — you’re not talking about making something wider, are you? I want to keep the original width of the sound. So does the „100% width“ as you say add some width, or keep the original width to a „wet“ level of 100%?

Oh! If you aren't widening it, it's easier. You only need the stereo enhancer plugin, with the high band set to 100% width, (leaves it unaltered) and the low band set to less than 100%, or 0% if you want it in mono. I use reaper, which has a built-in JS effect, but there are sure to be some free VSTs that do the trick. Stereo Enhancers are pretty common tools. Good luck!
