Which one is better when it comes down to the specs? What's the difference between a dynamic (SM7B) and a condenser (AT 4040) mic? Anyone have either? How good is it? What's the advantages and disadvantages of both?

This is for recording rap vocals at a home studio.

Those are some rapid-fire questions! The SM7B as well as other dynamic mics are less sensitive than condensers such as the AT4040 (the SM7B needs a lot of gain to sound it's best). Both are great mics, depending on the source...there really is no "best". Either would be fine for rap vocals; I'd personally go with the 4040 due to it's sensitivity and ability to be used on many different sources (probably better if you decide to record singers in the future). Good luck!

I own the SM7b. Its such an awesome mic. sounds great on most sources. its my go to mic for vocals, snare drum and micing cabinets. needs a preamp with a decent amout of gain for vocals. you wont be disappointed.

The AT seems to get good reviews, but i'd bet that the Shure sounds good more often on more sources.
