I am quite new to producing and basically I want to know what is the difference between mixing and mastering and what overall effect does each have?

    you mix then you master
mixing audio the most important thing you can do for a track with or without vocals includes using compression, reverb, delay, gating,eq,etc.
but you have to know where to use these tools and how much to use
it's not just making sure the vocals are louder than the beat
it's making sure the snare it cut through the mix along with the bass drum
so much to this I sugesst reading the gold evelopes/stickies in this section to understand this
youtube is your friend as well
so much more I wanted to say in a more intelligent way but I'm tiried
mastering-is usually involves a collection of songs making sure they all the same (or around the same sound level) precision tweaking

mastering is after you have adjusted levels and effects and pretty much the entire sound of the song. Mastering is done after mixing. Mastering is making the song loud, and fine tuning the track using compression, eq and imaging.

mixing is putting your loops/beats/recordings together in your preferred structure, then mastering is taking this raw lump sound and sculpturing it into a masterpiece
