    Mic Good for recording instruments?

For the summer, I want to build a studio out of my basement and for the time being, I'm just doing my research on what equipment I should buy and what I may need. One question that I do have is that, what kind of microphone will I need if I wanted to record an instrument. For example, If I had some maracas (sp.) and I wanted to incorporate that into my music, what kind of microphone will I need to get the job done and in good quality? I know a really good mic like this will probably cost me money, but I'm willing to sacrifice the dough to get this in order to make good music.

If any of you guys do this, please tell me what microphone you use that gives you a nice high quality sound that you can use in your music.

    Thanks

I would go with any decent stereo condenser mics... Google TweakHeadz - His guide can answer most of the questions you have + more!

Ya definately a good condenser mic. remember tho, with more condenser mics your hardware needs to support phantom power.

The Shure SM57 is a great low priced mic for recording instruments. It's great for guitar, drums and woodwinds.

You can't go wrong for only $99.00.

This all depends on what you are recording and in what configuration.

There are instruments that will call for a LDC and some SDC and others using a dynamic, and in all sorts of configurations.

With Maracas a decent LDC will do.

LDc for maracas for the reason that you'll be moving them around and the area the LDC can capture is slightly bigger than what an SM57 can capture. For many percussive instruments and many others it's hard to go wrong with an SM57. As always, your pre-amp is very important also.
