i've been googling this forever but i can't find anything good. what i want is for all of my instruments to be clearly heard on playback. i don't even know if that made sense exactly. i also want to know how to get the bass sounding "fuller". thanks for informative replies!

You take care of this stuff in the mixing stage. Start off with a good arrangement, then good sounds. Everything should be fairly clear before you start any mixing.

Think of it like this. When you play one instrument alone does everything sound clear? Of course, if it's a good sound, then it likely does. Next, you add a bass patch, do they both sound clear together? If the 1st instrument is not on the really low range, they probably do. If they don't, play the 1st instrument an octave higher or use an instrument that doesn't occupy the low end as much. If you think you'll be okay after mixing, then that will work also.

Maybe you have two guitars playing in the same range. You can either play one at a time only or pan them to different sides.

This is where the composition part is really important. Because you want to have the sounds sound okay when played. Sort of like a live band playing, or an orchestra where you can hear everything clear but no mixing is going on (orchestra) or not much at all in a live setting.

Forget about the mixing for now. Focus on these areas instead. It will make mixing much easier in the end.
