ok how about sharing the various ways u can (record and) mix vocals for RnB and HipHop Productions.

I got kinda stuck in my way...maybe ya'll know better/other ways to handle vocals. let's share

99% of all tracks i use this :

i record the vocals through my compressor with a soft compression to computer.
main voice is panned middle 0dB.
    2nd voice is panned -30 at -7dB.
    3rd voice is panned +30 at -7dB.

sometimes i vary with the pannings...maybe -40 or more...

after that i compress everything and put an reverb/delay whateva on it...

    how do u do it?

Well, I'm new around here, but have been doing R&B and hip Hop vocals for a while, and I think it's all up to the person recording.
Personally I just record things dry, with nothing at all on them, then I add the compression or reverb etc... And as for panning, depends on number of vocal tracks and their importance to the song and the part of the song their coming in on. For instance, If I had three chorus vocals and within those one melody, 2 harmony (obviously) I pan the low to the left and high to the right (both soft pan, about somewhere between 30 and 45%) and that's my preference.
    Just trust your ears man.

    My way

I am new here as well but this is also my specialty...
Typically for male I use an AKG 414 for the main track
No compression...nothing till mix time... just straight into my pre and into the 828 converters.
Mixing a main hip hop vocal (MALE) is usally roll the low off end with a gentle curve at 80hz
I typically run the vox through a delay (ECHO FARM) and pan the delays 50% out left and right.
Usually a very small room reverb (I use the lexicon room 1 algorithm) mixed in at about 20% with stereo outs panned hard left and right.
And I compress the HELL out of the vocals... The waves Rennassaince compressor is my fave
Then I throw a gate on the vocals as well.
Sometimes if there is a chorus that is actually sung I will mult the track and AUTO tune the hell out of the mult and mix it in behind the original vocal... Brings out a very cool sound and I eq the auto tuned track boosting the highs and lows.
It's always differnet but that is my standard grab and pull for most sessions...
    Glenn
Music makes the world go around...

This is the best way I have seen to mix a chorus on these forums ever! Props!

Record Dry Then Mix To Get Volume Right, Eq Next, Compress After That, Then Reverb Or Delay, Then Remix For Volume Prefection, Then Pan

Yes, Always record/track dry.Maybe add some addition EQ/Compression so the vocolist can hear themself better. But mixing is the process and tracking.Don't get too cut up with mixing during the recording process...Also the preamp and mic are key in your signal chain....Any more information needed contact me.
Need a good quality mix? Let me know...

    Vocal Mixing For Hip-hop/r&b

Mixing Vocals Is Actually Easier Done Than Said Lol. All Depends On Your Ears...im Not Good At Explaing...

But Heres How I Recommend Doing It

    Chorus:
    Record 3 Tracks
    -main Vocal
    -2 Others Just Like It
Pan The 2 Other Vocal Half Way Left, And Half Way Right
Keep The Main Vocal In The Middle

    Verse:
    Record 2 Tracks
    -main Vocal
    -2 Addlids
Turn The Volume Down On Both Addlids So Its Not Too Muddy
-barely, I Mean Barely Pan One To The Left And One To The Right

Mixing/ Making It Sound Good With Effects
-eq (left End A Little Low, Right End Kind Of High, And The Middle Into 2 Curves) Like I Said Im Not Good At Explaing

-compression (very Important, Just Try Different Compressions Until You Find One That Sounds Good To You...on Ethat Bring The Vocals Out And Even, It Should Sound A Lil Crispier And Clear Actually)

-reverb (try Not To Add 2 Much Reverb Due To It Could Make The Vocals And Lyrics Hard To Reconigze)

-gate (gates Are Good Depending On The Recorded Vocals, Threw My Experience Gates Work Well To Clear Up Some Things, But Sometimes It Can Clear Too Much And Clip Some Of The Vocals)

-pop/ Clicks/ Noise/ Hiss Reductions (even If You Have The Clearest And Crispiest Vocals Done, I Would Still Run Them Threw All 3 Of These Just To Make Sure That Everything Is Smooth...run The Final Mix Threw One Of These *cool Edit Pro 2.1 Has Some Good Ones*

-anything Else Is Up To You, Fool Around With Some Effects
If I Missed Anything Someone Correct Me...but I Hope This Helped In Someway

Just Added 2 New Tracks *these Were Recorded With A $20 Microphone, But Look And See How Good The Vocals Were Mixed, It S A Good Example Of What I Was Explaing And The Results...$20 Mic!!!
