I guess the kind of sound i want is like Dj Premier. I don't know if it's the packs i currently have or just my Eqing.

First off you need good drumsounds to start with.
You can get some DJ Premier kits from the internet that are actually sampled of DJ Premier songs and processed for you.

Than you can use EQ/Compression/Chorus to make your drums sound really banging and the chorus to make it sound more live.

If you use FL Studio. You should get and install the Waves C-1 compressor.
Than i can send you Mixerpresets for Kick/Snare/Hi-Hat/Percussion.
Than you need to route all your drums through those channels and they will sound banging immediately.

Example of what my drums sound like:

It's simple - you just sample the snare that hits hard!

find GOOD snares... and layer them put more than one hitting at a time... I do that all the time.. adds another dimension to the beat.. peep my beats in my sig for reference

Yeah all good advice here, also just be aware of the level. Mixing low allows you to turn the snare up without clipping and then run it through a mastering vst to get your loudness.

There a few things to keep in mind about how dj premier gets that sound in the first place. It largely comes from sampling records. Get sounds of that era and then he samples them into his mpc 60 which cuts off some of the high end leaving space to add a little bit of bass boost. He also does some EQing from his mixer as the sample hits his mpc I think and he stacks them and uses good drum sounds. His beats knock like that way before the mix engineer gets it I think.

Exactly and I quoted it for truth

It's important to get your stuff 'there' as much as you can - don't leave it for mixing/mastering/etc

I don't know how many times this kind of issue should be discussed - the main difference between top producers and guys learning it at home, trying to be like them is:

    - experience
    - top notch ones are not lazy to leave stuff for mixing/mastering
    - they choose the best sounds they can from the get go in terms of he's willing to spend weeks searching for the perfect open hihat
    - they don't strive to 'sound like someone'
    - they follow their own taste and feel not necessarily to 'sound great' as top priority - music is about emotion and feel
    - they can afford all gear you can think of, but less is more - limiting yourself expands creativity...in this day and age of 'digital expansion' where everything is possible with few clicks music never sucked more
    - best hip hop was done on one single sampler (think of old MPCs and SP1200)
    - I can go on, but what's the point when someone will open a new thread without even thinking of digesting stuff I've mentioned above

Sorry for the rant-like post, but I'm assuring you all I have nothing but best intentions

Why apologize its the truth. I often look at the guys who have every plug in on the planet and think for what? It often times did not make their music better and feel they should have spent more time honing in on what they have rather than trying to keep up with the Joneses.

If you are looking for particular method then let everyone know what equipment you are trying to achieve "hard hitting" snares on. I use NI Maschine and Reason's Kong. In both engines doesn't matter, I find about 4 different types of snares and Link them. The way to link them in NI Maschine is choose a snare>choose another> and so on until you have all the snares you want Linked. Once you have them press the Pad that you to be your Master snare meaning when you hit that pad it will control all the rest. Once you selected the pad hit Pad Mod> Link > Link 1 > Master. Next hit the next snare pad and do the same thing except instead of master make it Slave. Do this with the rest of your snares as Slaves and give your master pad a tap, see if that doesnt thicken your snares and make em hit hard (assuming you have NI Maschine) Other DAW's you can do this with just figure out how to link the pad groups or stack them. Make sure to use a bit of compression to prevent clipping. Hope this helps homie!

You had some good ideas here but skip compression level the layers better and use some EQ to sculpt the sound to your needs. If you do it correctly you shoulnd't need compression at all.
