A good pair of headphones won't kill you either til you can drop some grip on some monitors.

I too use Sony Bookshelves. I power mine with my 200w Computer gaming Subwoofer. People always swear that's not a good chain until they hear it. Then they're mad at what they paid for their systems.

In all fairness, I do use Event 20/20s for mastering though. But thats for depth perception on other people's music that I didn't create myself. My Sony's and my Sub are all i need when I'm doing it all myself.
Two things that annoy me are people who are positive out of ignorance, and people who are negative out of bitterness. People who are neither usually get along with me and agree with most of what I say. People who are one of the 2 think I'm the other.

Id just buy bookshelf speakers and a amp. You can get both under 100. I have even gone to pawn shops and second hand stores and seen 3 or 4 different set ups that would work for as little as 40 dollars for 2 speakers and a amp!
