I use FL Studio (For Now) and have been studying EQ and compression but I don't get some stuff...If I turn my beats up loud they sound really crappy...should i turn all bass off on all instruments where that shouldn't have bass...could that be the problem?..should I compress the whole mix?...Also if u know anything about Mastering Hit me with some useful tips
    Thanx,

    Lots of matering tutorials:
    http://www.theprojectstudiohandbook.com/directory.htm
    http://www.looperman.com/tutorials.php

Very good EQ tutorial READ IT:
    http://www.dnbscene.com/articles.php?arttype=2

You say if you turn them upp they sound crap. Is it before it gets to the compressor? In that case everything exceeding the threshold gets compressed by the ratio. wich means that if you have a fast, short decay it will sound **** since you make the beat FLAT. Either change threshold or simply raise the volume of the signal after the compressor.

I dont see how the bass could be the problem except when it comes to the kick it shouldnt iterfear with the rest of the drums.. But you should defenently remove bass on all instruments that YOU dont wanna have bass on. even hihats some times contains lower freq making the room for bass somewhat smaller. Check pads and strings tough they often contain way to much low end. Read that EQ tutorial its great!!

Compressing the whole mix you only should do with a limiter IMO, To remove all peaks. note : there shouldnt be to many of them cause if there are you probably EQed badly or need compression elsewhere (maybe on beat). ANd you also want a mulitband compressor on the whole mix. and do READ that tutorial.

Thx alot...I'll read it..I've been studying up on everything I can because someday I'm going to be able to use it in my career (whatever it comes out to be) and I have been learning a lot especially from people like you guys on FP

    THX

Oh yeah..I'm also trying to learn the layout of mixers (if you get me) I looked for guides that tell what everything does and the basics but can't find a thing....ANYONE?
