Why do I keep getting uneven volume in my mixes?

It's driving me nuts. I'll chop a up a sample, and while it's fine in the beginning, the further along I go with the song -- adding effects, etc, the volume decides to jump around randomly on everything. In particular I'm talking about the volume getting louder on me as the song progresses. Even when the layers are the same as they were in the beginning. What could be going on?

I actually figured it out, I was automating the volume of an effect I'd forgotten about. btw 47 thanks in 47 posts, impressive ha.
