Well on the affordable side both the Audio-Technica AT2035 and the Rode NT2-A are exceptional. The high-end, more expensive alternatives, the AKG C12 VR and the The Neumann M149 Tube are what you'll find in most world-class studios. These are great mics to start your search with but it really depends on what you're needs for the microphone are.

A lot of people recommend the Rode NT1A. I don't know if you'd call it expensive or not but its around the $250-$300 area. But in general, check out different kinds in your budget range and find sound tests on youtube. That's always helpful.
