Sound not cutting through

I've messed around with this, and usually if a synth isn't cutting through the mix I usually add white noise to the synth. Usually vst's such as massive have these sorts of functions. It's inaudible during the mix but it helps cut through.

use a compressor or LP/HP filter to tame sounds with wide ranging frequencies; after making EQ cuts and panning adjustments that make room for the sound I want upfront in the mix...

Your technique definitely wouldn't work for me dude.
