Should I use compression on samples?

Should I use compression on my samples? They were mixed, so all instruments, tracks they contain were compressed before.

Depends on the sample and desired end result. You really shouldn't be compressing anything unless there's a need for it.

I agree with Krushing, unless there's a reason for the compression then you don't need to use it. You could use to add more punch to a sample or even to adjust the tone of a sample.

Basically.

The main reason to use compression on a sample would be to make it really sit out in front of the mix.

But that would be after you've done all the mixing you need to do.

Limiting should basically be a last resort type of thing (I've tried everything and it still isn't loud enough)

It all depends on what you're looking for. Compare the compressed and uncompressed sample and hear the difference. As for the drums...i would recommend you do compression and some EQ. Lows, highs and boost.
