Multitrack program/software

Our band wants to record our songs with the PC in the future.

We would record our beat in a .wav file I presume. But then... anyone know what kind of (shareware) software we could use to multitrack our songs? We want to put vocals over it later and be able to manipulate those still without altering the beat.

pro-tools free offers 8 tracks of audio, which you can bounce down and stuff. It's available as a download from www.digidesign.com and is (as the name implies) completely free.
