Does copying and pasting a track really cause phase cancellation ?

On its own: No!
But process that track differently to the original and yes you will begin to hear all sorts of problems caused by the differences between the original and the copy.
Move the copy even a 1 click in the timing scheme and you will introduce issues that cannot be fixed until you phase align it again - move it back to where it came from....
