Microphones wont play

I want to add my vocals/sax/acoustic guitar to the mix for the first time , but I can't get any microphones to work.
I downloaded the latest drivers for my card (live platinum) but no joy.
When I checked the multimedia drivers for windows (ME) I noticed that there was no + next to the line input drivers icon.Would that be the cause?
Everything else works o.k including keyboard.
Any help would be appreciated.

if everything else works like keyboard but the mic will not ,it is the mic.
if it is on the same line
1 what kind of mic is it(active -passive)battery-phantom power.

Thanks for the reply..
They are passive mics that I plug directly into my soundcard.Some how the mic input on the mixers(windows and the sound card)had been muted , so now I get a signal showing the mic's are working o.k but still nothing records in any of my programs..
