Do you let the band play the entire song and let the magic come in the editing stages? I've always wondered how the verse chorus verse in a mainstream rock song always sound so perfect but it's usually NOT when these bands play it live. Do you just let the band play live and simply use the best tracking to piece it all back together into perfection? Some rock bands sound rough during live performances but are quite polished in the recordings. I wondered how the producer did it in the studio...I guess same can be said to pop stars who really can't sing but sound so great in the recordings.
When I started out, I wanted the tracking to be so perfect to a point that it killed the "soul" of the performance because I didn't know polishing can come after tracking.
