How To Get That Reallly Heavy thumby kick drum

kk im recording a few metal bands and i cant quite find a good heavy kick drum sound without my kick meters clipping im running threw apex drum mics a berhinger eurorack 2442 fx pro and m-audio 1814 and curenntly using garage band bucause i have a imac intel duo and im waitng for pt m-powered to come out any buddie have micing techiniques or anything that would help

where are you miking the kick? if you are getting clipping, you may be miking it too close (the "proximity effect" gets overblown when you get close to a kick). also, a compressor could make all the difference, if theres one thing a compressor is absolutely necessary for (imho) its the recording of live drums (unless you are doing extremely distant miking).

once i put a LP filter on the mic that was going to my kick, and messed around with the cutoff and even threw a lil resonance on there... and it sounded really cool... different but cool.
