How do I best record songs on a microphone?

How far away should the microphone be?

How loud should my voice be? (on an imaginary scale of 1 to 10)

Should I try to keep the volume and distance uniform, or should I go louder/quieter/closer/further to create a dynamic range?

Im not an expert on recording vocals but i've done some research...

so from what i've researched, 5, 6 inches away maybe? The closer you get the deeper your voice will get. And don't aim directly at the mic, aim a little off center so you dont blast the mic with excess breath wind.

And sure, all of the volume dynamics are part of the singer's skillset. If the singer is good (experienced), they'll know to get a little further away when they pick up the volume, ...breathing to the side so the obnoxious inhale isn't recorded or inhaling quietly.

And record dry so the initial signal isn't screwed up. ...a little reverb may be okay to help the singer picture their voice in the mix.

If you have a clean initial signal, you can fix it later. If you have a screwed up initial signal, you can't fix it and have to re-record.
