exciter or compressor-which one 1st?

i just got a behringer tube composer which i use to even out the peaks on my full mix. ( very happy with it ).
i also have a behringer ultrafex pro ( exciter + stereo widener ) which i used to use to slightly widen the mix.
the problem is that i'm not too sure which is better to use first, or at all.
i stopped using the ultrafex completely 'cos im not sure. it could probably be used either way ( and if it sounds ok then it is ok, etc..) i just thought that there might be a 'proper' way...
any ideas/guidelines?

You want to compress first to get rid of the harmonic grit, and keep your levels in check, then excite it to give it some sparkle.
