Are compressing KICKS really necessary?

To anyone who reads this thread and disagrees with krushing..

.. you don't know what you're doing.
 
If your using samples, they probably already been compressed a few times. If your recording a live kick, then you will probably need to compress it a little bit to keep it level.
 
If I want more sustain, or less attack, yes. Or if I want more weight I'll parallel compress/limit.
