Best way to test is vocals are too quiet or loud?

What I currently do is turn the volume down to the lowest discernible setting. If I can mostly only hear the vocals, it's too loud (or the instrumentals are too quiet).

Does anyone else have a method of detecting this?
 
I haven't tried that but it's an interesting idea... ..I'll try it out.

and I'm sure it will help my ears considering I'm getting the "producers ring" in the ears (aka tinnitus)...
 
I think the problem with mixing "loud" music is that it all congeals together. Both are loud, and neither is apparently subordinate at such a high volume. Perhaps someone who is used to their own voice may find it harder to be aware when they're too loud And, on the same token, there are also times when I've overcompensated and the vocals were not very intelligible.
 
Listening at a low volume is what worked well for me. Also try exporting out the mix and listening to it low on apple earpods.
