Aux send effect Stereo shift

Hello,
I have a exciter on my aux send/stereo return mackie mixer. Whenever I dial in the effect to a track the stereo image is somehow shifting, meaning one channel becomes louder than the other...

Thus, make the effect pretty useless...

Its a vintage Aphex 2 Aural Exciter. However I had the same issue connecting a compressor aux send/stereo return. Thus, I dont think its the device. Also it cant be the mixer since it is brand new.

It works well until a certain level then the shift starts kicking in...
 
Well, it certainly could be the mixer (not the first time someone may have sold a defective unit). What else is in the audio chain? How is the excited set-up? Could you post an audio sample? Pictures?
