Automatic Release Compressor; How does it work?

Watching some mixing tutorials. Saw a compressor with automatic release setting. How does this work? How is release time calculated when auto release is turned on? For what purposes is it used?
 
It calculates the beat by itself and tries to release the signal of the compressor before the next hit. The tempo of your project matters.
 
There's plenty of hardware comps that have an auto release function - which obviously don't "calculate the beat", since they're basically a bunch of capacitors instead of an algorithm. Plugin comps may as well do some pre-emptive calculations, but how the "classic" auto release works is explained in detail here: Q What does a compressor's auto-release control do?
