Audio interfaces non-DAW

Hello! Do audio interfaces work out of DAW? For example, if I were to play an mp3 file from my desktop, or if I were to play a YouTube video, would I still get audio from the audio interface? I have been thinking about buying the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. Stupid question but im new to this stuff :(. Thanks!
 
yeah the soundcard replaces the built-in soundcard unless they are conflicting with each other. But the built-in one can usually be disabled in the BIOS in such instances.
